Japanese App Lets You Smell Food Through Your Phone

Japanese App Lets You Smell Food Through Your Phone (Video)
Tokyo-based app developer Scentee has come up with a bizarre but brilliant invention: an app that lets you smell food. The Hana Yakiniku (translation: Nose Grilled Meat) kit contains several scent cartridges that plug into your smartphone. The cartridge set, which is for sale beginning November 15, retails for $35.57.
Scentee believes that customers who try Hana Yakiniku will give up meat altogether in favor of basic rice dishes combined with their meat scent app. The goal is to save money and calories by quelling meat cravings with a whiff of, say, short ribs.
The Hana Yakiniku ad suggests that the app is perfect for women on an all-lettuce diet, broke students, and couples just beginning to date. Although we’re a bit dubious about these claims, it’s true that our olfactory system is the key to how we experience flavor. We’ll have to try an all-vegan diet combined with the meat scents to know if the app really works.
